X appoints legal representative in Brazil and tries to avoid new sanctions from the Supreme Court

247 - Elon Musk's social network X (formerly Twitter) appointed lawyer Rachel de Oliveira Villa Nova Conceição as the platform's legal representative in Brazil, said the company's lawyers André Zonaro and Sérgio Rosenthal to Reuters on Friday (20). The lack of a legal representative in the country was one of the reasons why Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the platform's suspension last month.

The Court stated that the deadline given by Minister Alexandre de Moraes for X to prove the legality of the new legal representation in Brazil ends at 9:29 PM this Friday.

On Thursday (19), Moraes gave the company 24 hours to prove the reactivation of the legal representation in the country. The minister’s decision came after the network informed the Supreme Court that lawyers André Zonaro Giacchetta and Sérgio Rosenthal would represent the company.

The minister asked the company to send registration documents from the Commercial Registry and proof of the appointment of the mentioned lawyers to officially represent it.

In another decision made on Thursday, Moraes also fined X R$ 5 million. The measure was taken after the company circumvented the decision that suspended the network last month. The evasion occurred by changing the company's IP address.

The suspension of the social network was determined after the 24-hour deadline given by the minister to Elon Musk to appoint a legal representative in Brazil. The decision was confirmed by the Court's First Panel.

On August 17, Musk announced the closure of the company's office in Brazil after the social network was fined for refusing to comply with the court order to remove profiles of individuals under investigation by the Court for posting content considered anti-democratic.
