Alckmin reacts to Trump's threats, warns about trade quotas, and defends a "win-win" partnership with the U.S.

247 – Vice President Geraldo Alckmin reacted this Monday (10) to the tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, which could impact the national steel industry.

On Sunday (9), Trump told journalists that he intends to impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports to the U.S., which would directly affect Brazilian producers, as Brazil is the second-largest supplier to the U.S. market, behind only Canada.

Alckmin, who is also Minister of Industry, defended a win-win partnership with the U.S. "It is a partnership that has lasted for two centuries and is a mutual collaboration. It's a win-win," Alckmin told journalists, as reported by Exame magazine.

He also reiterated his willingness for dialogue but warned about possible trade quotas. "The last time this was done, there were quotas. So, let's wait and see. Our position is always one of collaboration, partnership, and benefiting our populations."

The Brazilian government is studying possible countermeasures in response to the U.S. president's threats, but no decision has been made yet, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has ordered that negotiations be attempted first. (With information from Reuters).
