Lula praises Fernanda Torres and says democracy must always be defended
President stated it is impossible not to continue highlighting the actress's achievement
247 - President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva once again praised Fernanda Torres, winner of the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Film, for her portrayal of Eunice Paiva in the movie Ainda Estou Aqui.
Torres played Eunice Paiva, a lawyer and widow of Rubens Paiva, a congressman who was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by the military regime in 1971.
Lula, who had previously commended Fernanda Torres's performance on other occasions, stated in a social media post this Monday (6) that it is impossible not to continue emphasizing the actress's achievement. He highlighted the central role of culture in turning the memory of figures like Rubens and Eunice Paiva into symbols of resistance while condemning the horrors of authoritarianism.
Lula also stressed that the movie Ainda Estou Aqui is an essential bridge for bringing new generations closer to the debate about the military dictatorship, especially in current times marked by threats to democracy. "We must always remain vigilant and ready to defend democracy," the president declared.
"It is impossible not to keep talking about the great accomplishment represented by Fernanda Torres's Golden Globe win for us, Brazilians. Cinema and culture are powerful tools to keep alive the stories that shape who we are, turning memory into learning and art into resistance.
The movie reflects on a past filled with horrors that must be remembered so that new generations can learn and older ones never forget. By recognizing Fernanda Torres's work, the world also acknowledges the importance of telling our stories, rejecting authoritarianism and violence.
May the strength and resilience of Eunice Paiva, as depicted in this remarkable film, build bridges and bring new generations closer to this crucial debate for preserving our young democracy. We must always remain vigilant and ready to defend it," Lula wrote on the platform X.
Fernanda Torres was awarded in Los Angeles, United States, the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Film, becoming the first Brazilian to win the prestigious trophy. She competed alongside Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Pamela Anderson, and Kate Winslet. The film Ainda Estou Aqui, which earned the actress the award, was directed by filmmaker Walter Salles.
