The role of the Supreme Court is to maintain independence and apply the law, says Dino amid pressure from Chamber of Deputies

247 – Supreme Court (STF) Justice Flávio Dino stated that the Court will remain independent, even in the face of pressure from public or private agents regarding its rulings. The statement was made in a context of tension between the STF and the Chamber of Deputies, which is discussing proposals that could affect the Judiciary's role.

“Our role is exactly to maintain independence, apply the law, and do what is right, regardless of any political consequences,” he emphasized. In his speech, he also distinguished between constructive criticism and attempts to destabilize institutions, stressing the importance of preserving the integrity of the judicial system.

The Chamber’s Constitution and Justice Committee recently approved proposals seeking to limit the power of judges, allowing the Legislative Branch to overturn Court decisions and creating a new process for impeaching justices.

According to Dino, if these measures are approved, the STF will review their constitutionality.
