Itamaraty regrets Trump’s unilateral tariffs and affirms that the Brazilian government will defend national producers

247 – The Itamaraty Palace expressed regret in a statement this Wednesday (2) over the unilateral imposition of an additional 10% tariff on Brazilian products, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Earlier in the day, Trump had announced "reciprocal" trade tariffs of 10% against Brazil, delivering an aggressive speech to justify the measures.

In the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) said that the U.S. is violating international commitments by applying the tariffs, pointed out that the U.S. maintains one of the largest trade surpluses with Brazil, and pledged to hold consultations with the private sector to organize a response.

The federal government also stated that it remains open to dialogue with White House officials and emphasized that the National Congress is analyzing a proposal for retaliation.

The Itamaraty and the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (Mdic) also stated that Brazil does not rule out the possibility of appealing to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the tariff hike.

"While remaining open to deepening the dialogue established in recent weeks with the U.S. government to reverse the announced measures and counteract their harmful effects as soon as possible, the Brazilian government is evaluating all possible actions to ensure reciprocity in bilateral trade, including appealing to the World Trade Organization in defense of the country’s legitimate national interests," the MRE document reads.
